Tag – Movie Review

Tag is a movie that was released earlier this year. The movie stars Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm, Jake Johnson, Ed Helms, Hannibal Buress, Isla Fisher and Rashida Jones. It is about a group of lifelong friends who have been playing the same game of tag for years during the month of May.

I’m going to be honest. I had extremely low expectations for this movie and I for good reason. Why would any studio greenlight a movie about tag? This should have never worked but I’m happy to say, that I really liked the movie! Tag exceeded every expectation I had for the film.

One of the highlights was the friendship and interactions between the main characters. Their friendships feel real and the conversations lead to extremely funny moments in the movie. One of my favourite character dynamics was Jake Johnson and Jon Hamm. The two bounced off each other really well, and even though their plot line involving Rashida Jones was quite generic, the character moments made up for it.

While most of the cast was fantastic, Jake Johnson was the standout performer for me. He was the only actor who landed nearly all his jokes and his comedic timing was great. I’ve only seen a couple episodes of New Girl but now I’m interested in binging the entire show. Ed Helms also shined and his character was well-written in my opinion. I love Andy in The Office (till season 8) so I love seeing him on screen. He was hilarious.

Even though a lot of the jokes did land, too many fell flat for a film that is supposed to be a comedy. Moreover, despite the silly premise, the movie still has some extremely generic plot points. If not for the chemistry between the actors and certain arcs, this movie could have been a lot less exciting.

However, it is exciting. One of the greatest sequences was the final few minutes. It was surprisingly emotional and cements the movie as a great story about friendship. There are also a number of well choreographed tag sequences in the movie. Wow I never thought I would say that. One of the best part about these tag sequences was how they revealed what the characters were thinking. I won’t spoil it but that was one of the funniest moments.

Although most of the characters were great, the reporter felt forced and unnecessary to the story. She wasn’t funny either which makes me wonder why the writer put her in the story.

Tag was a movie that had an extremely generic plot but the relationship between the characters and a ridiculous premise made the film enjoyable. The movie gets an B+ from me.
