Most Surprising Movies of 2018

One of the things I love about watching movies is when it completely takes you by surprise. I love it when a movie you had no expectations for absolutely blows you away. This list is going to look through the ten most surprising of 2018.

10. Bohemian Rhapsody

After all the mixed reviews that came out of the premiere, my expectation for the movie were pretty low. The fact that the Rotten Tomatoes score is only in the 60s is genuinely surprising to me considering how much I loved this movie. Rami Malek shines and the Live Aid scene is easily the best scene in any movie this year to me. There are a bunch of other aspects of the film that were great to me. My full review is available in the Movie Review section.

9. BlacKkKlansman

I had heard absolutely nothing about this film before I watched and was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved it. There is already a review up on the website. Spike Lee’s direction was absolutely perfect and the balance between the humour and dramatic moments was very well done. This movie is one of the more surprising ones and is probably going to get an Oscar nomination. It may also be in my top 10 of the year.

8. Eighth Grade

When I heard that YouTuber Bo Burnham was going to making a coming of age story, I didn’t care. But when I finally watched it, the movie was surprisingly great. Elsie Fisher knocks it out of the park and Bo Burnham’s screenplay is definitely Oscar worthy.

7. Searching

I knew this movie would be good. To me the trailers looked intense. But, I had no idea Searching was going to be one of the best films of the year. John Cho’s performance is one of the best of the year and the whole screen gimmick was used really well by director Aneesh Chaganty. My full review is on this website under the movies section.

6. Upgrade

Upgrade was a movie I didn’t expect much from. It was surprising to me that this is one of the best original sci-fi movies in years. Logan Marshall-Green is absolutely great in this role and the way he uses his body movements is very realistic. For a movie that had an extremely low budget, the cinematography and visuals are wowing. Furthermore, the action is great and the movie felt like it could’ve been an episode of Black Mirror. Definitely check it out if you like the show or are a fan of the sci-fi action genre.

5. Set It Up

Romantic comedies on Netflix normally aren’t my thing. In fact, I think most of them are absolutely horrendous. That’s why it was surprising that I enjoyed Set It Up so much. The characters were great and Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell had strong chemistry and unlike most rom-coms, this movie doesn’t really have several cheesy moments. However, it is slightly predictable but the humour and chemistry between the leads makes up for it.

4. Teen Titans GO! to the Movies

The animated show sucks. It is one of the worst things I have ever seen. The only reason I decided to watch this is because it’s a comic book movie and that’s my favourite genre. This felt like a PG-13 Deadpool to me and I had a great time watching it. This movie is packed with easter eggs and a lot of the humour and songs worked brilliantly for me. This is one of the most surprising movies of me and I would definitely suggest this one to every comic book movie fan.

3. Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider isn’t one of the best movies of the year but, it was surprising to me. Most video game movies are dreadful and the fact that one of them was actually good is wonderful news. Alicia Vikander was great in the role and a lot of the action sequences were really entertaining. The final act had a lot of Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade vibes and I had a great time watching it. The dialogue can feel awkward at points but overall, I had a good time with the movie.

2. Tag

A movie like this should NEVER work. But it did. Tag is a fun comedy with pretty great characters who have fun interactions. The final scene was surprising considering how emotional it was. I already have a review on it so check it out as there are more details on what I thought about the movie.

1. A Simple Favor

In my opinion, the trailers for this movie were absolutely garbage. None of the marketing stood out to me except that one poster. It looked like a generic story. Wow I was wrong. A Simple Favor is one of the most weird and unpredictable stories I’ve ever seen. Paul Feig did a great job crafting the story. But what really made the movie work to me was the chemistry between Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively. The two bounced off each other really well and put in great performances. A lot of the humour worked to me and as I said before, the plot was unpredictable and there were several twists. This led to the third act being messy but that didn’t really impact the movie that much.

And that’s my list. What 2018 movies surprised you? Do you agree with the movies on this list?
