2019 has already been a pretty good year for original TV show with hit Netflix show Sex Education dropping on Netflix a couple days ago. If you haven’t sen it already definitely check it out. The characters are great, the story is unique and the comedy rarely fails. It got me thinking about what other new shows are coming out this year. After some research, I’ve compiled a list of my most anticipated new TV shows coming out in 2019.
What We Do In The Shadows
What We Do In The Shadows is a movie directed by Taika Waititi and is a found footage horror-comedy movie that is now getting a spin-off show. I absolutely adored the movie and can’t wait to see something similar to the movie on the small screen. I feel like the style of filming will work really well and could be really similar to something like The Office. If you’re a fan of comedy and Taika’s style, definitely put this on your list.
This is the show many people have begun to refer to as Netflix’s Game of Thrones. After the hit series ends next year, pretty much all streaming services will be trying to find a way to create a show as popular. Video game adaptations have been terrible so far and that’s putting it lightly. However, some of the TV adaptations have been much better. Furthermore, Henry Cavill is a great actor and from what I’ve heard, the game has a great story. Definitely keep an eye out for this one.
I’m not sure if this is coming out this year but if it is, it’s easily my most anticipated. The Office is easily the greatest sit-com of all time and is definitely one of my favourite shows of all time. Seeing Steve Carrel and Greg Daniels reunite to create what many have labelled Netflix’s version of The Office sounds great to me. A workplace comedy with Steve Carrel definitely deserves some of your attention so keep your eye out for this one. Also, if you haven’t seen The Office yet, definitely put it on the top of your watchlist.
I’m a huge fan of Alan Moore’s classic comic so seeing another live action version of it interests me. I’ve heard that the showrunner Lindelof has made changes from the comic and I’m okay with that. Straight up copying the comics could work like the movie Watchmen did. However, it will never reach the quality of the comic so by changing it up, the show gives itself a chance to be unique. Jeremy Irons is in it as well and I absolutely love the guy as an actor. We got some footage in the HBO 2019 preview above.
Now I’m not the biggest fan of Titans. I saw the pilot and it completely turned me off from the series and the streaming service as a whole. But, I do hear it gets better so I might pick it up again. 2019 is going to be an even more packed year for DC with shows like Swamp Thing, Stargirl, Doom Patrol and more coming out. The one I’m looking forward to the most is Swamp Thing. I liked Aquaman but I love that Wan is returning to do more horror related work and I think the show could work.
Alex Garland is one hell of a filmmaker. He’s responsible for Ex Machina and Annihilation. Two films that I loved. Devs is going to be a show following a young computer engineer who looks into an organisation who she believes is responsible for the disappearance of her boyfriend. The Garland name alone makes me confident that the story is going to be great and the premise has tons of potential. This could be one of the better TV shows of 2019 so definitely look out for it.
Jordan Peele. Al Pacino. Logan Lerman. Killing Nazis. If that hasn’t already got your attention I don’t what will. The cast for this Amazon Prime show looks great and Jordan Peele is one of the hottest names in Hollywood after Get Out. The show sounds like it could be a blast and I trust the entire cast to pull off a great story.
His Dark Materials
I don’t know much about the plot for this TV show other than the fact that it is based on the book series and the cast looks great. I don’t know a lot about the book and don’t want to look it up just in case it has spoilers. Lin Manuel Miranda and Dafne Keen are on board for this and I love those actors. What really gets me interested though is James McEvoy. After seeing Glass, I believe he is one of the most underrated actors working today and I’m interested in anything he’s going to be in.
One of the aspects of the Star Wars universe that has frustrated me is the fact that we always seem to be stuck with the same characters or plot points(The Death Star in Rogue One) when the universe is so big and we could be exploring multiple different parts of the galaxy. That’s why this gets me hyped. It’s a got a completely new character and they’re exploring an aspect of the universe we haven’t seen in live action. Moreover, everyone attached to the project is super talented. Jon Favreau and Taika Waititi are incredible storytellers and from what I’ve heard, Dave Filoni is also a good director. Pedro Pascal is also the star and as a fan of Oberyn Martell, I can’t wait.
This is one of those HBO miniseries that are always great. Zendaya is in a more serious role for this one. Furthermore, the whole concept has tons of storytelling potential and the actors could really shine here. Apart from one of those HBO previews, we haven’t got a lot of footage. Don’t be surprised if this ends up in the Emmy conversation later this year as it has tons of potential.
Marvel’s Disney+ TV Shows
As a huge MCU fan, whatever show they put out in 2019 is one of my most anticipated. At the time of writing, we don’t know which one will release this year but all of them fascinate me. A Loki prequel could be great and could flesh out a lot of the Asgard lore. Exploring the whole Vision and Scarlett Witch dynamic post Endgame could be fascinating. Even just exploring Scarlett Witch’s abilities is something I want to see. In addition, the fact that the Captain Marvel and Black Widow writer has been hired as the showrunner makes me believe Marvel is confident in her writing ability. A Falcon and the Winter Solider buddy cop series sounds awesome to me, especially after seeing them interact in Civil War. Whatever they do put out this year, consider my hyped.
